As there are so many great detectives I decided to choose by those that had they greatest impact on our culture and the genre. Some are so well done they have become the meaning of detective to us. Sometimes they appear in detective fiction and sometimes in genre fiction of a different nature but these characters are detectives at heart nonetheless.
